Got the basics paddleboarding down, and looking to move on to more advanced techniques? Or maybe you're a beginner who prefers a one-on-one learning environment. Group lessons run at specific dates throughout the season. Learn to paddle in a friendly, inclusive group setting and find like-minded people to explore the lakes!

Want to learn the skills but the dates don’t work for you? Private lessons are an affordable option to have a custom lesson just for you, or with a few friends. Private lessons run daily.

First time on a paddle board? Do you want to feel confident on the water? Our Flatwater Basics course gives you personalized instruction from a Paddle Canada Certified guide to get on and off the board, paddle straight, turn, and stop. It will also teach you about different types of SUP boards and how to make decisions about when and where to paddle. We can help you use strategies to move differently if you have mobility limitations and will teach you within your comfort levels so you are safe and happy throughout the lesson!

Course Content

This course focuses on the introduction of paddling - the equipment, safety considerations, and beginner techniques. You are not required to stand at any time during this course if you do not feel safe doing so.

Technique

  • Lifting and carrying a board

  • Choosing and holding a paddle

  • Mounting a board at a beach or dock

  • Prone paddling

  • Paddling while kneeling

  • Standing up

  • Paddling in a straight line

  • Forward stroke

  • Braking stroke

  • Sweep strokes

  • Paddling in windy or turbulent conditions

Safety

  • Falling off safely

  • Remounting the board

  • Use of a leash

  • Understanding weather and paddling conditions

  • Proper clothing

  • Safety equipment

Have you been SUP boarding before and want to learn what you can really do with a board and paddle? This is a progression from the Flatwater Basics Course were you will build on introductory concepts with a Stellar Instructor.

The Advanced Flatwater course is designed to teach you advanced skills needed to progress you towards one of the three SUP disciplines: River, Surf or Touring. By the end you will feel nimble on your board, be able to make quick turns and paddle faster and with ease.

Course Content

This course focuses on the progression of technique for either efficient long distance paddling (touring) or river paddling.

Please bring sunscreen, water, a hat, a windbreaker and a warm change of clothing for after your lesson. You can choose to wear your own clothes instead of a wetsuit on the lake; be aware that it may be cooler on the lake than on land.

June - September. Kinbasket Lake Marina, Valemount, BC

You will meet your guide in the parking lot of the lake for your lesson.

 
 

All participants are required to sign a waiver in order to join any trip provided by Stellar Descents. 

Participants must be 19 years of age to sign our waiver form. If participants are under the age of 19 years, their waiver form must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.
